Where is reverse on a 4 speed

Loosen the cover bolts and put the trans in reverse--this will set the clearance --with the trans in reverse retighten the cover bolts. Quote: Hey all. Re: can't get into reverse gear - LM 4 speed 66 Post by rnd » Thu Nov 12, am Yes it has going into reverse before with a lot of errors, but I replaced the floors to stiffen the area around the floor shifter since this had rust and was weak. I will try your suggestion. I notice there is not much "adjustment" opportunities by loosening the clamp to rotate the coupler since the coupler is indexed to the tube via the slot. Re: can't get into reverse gear - LM 4 speed 66 Post by terribleted » Thu Nov 12, am Indeed there is not much but I have seen that what is there sometimes is enough to get reverse or 3 and 4 for that matter to function again.

It does not take a very big movement to make a difference. You say you replaced the floors and that the old floors were weak and rusty. Is it possible that the shifter base position may not be square with the shift rod in the transmission?

If the shifter base is tipped to the side at all that could cause this problem. Is the base properly shimmed to the floor. It will not function properly bolted solid to the floor generally problems here do not prevent the selection of reverse but make all gear selection sloppy or difficult If all else fails, assuming the transmission is ok and that it is a shift tube rotation problem, you could trim the index tab a little to allow a bit more rotation to allow getting into the reverse gate.

Re: can't get into reverse gear - LM 4 speed 66 Post by 66vairguy » Thu Nov 12, am Ah the floors If I recall correctly -- the shifter shaft rotates opposite the external tube. Put another way if the shifter is loose in the floor when you move it sideways to reverse it rocks the external tube CCW relative to the rear of the car and the inner shaft rotates CW - so yes a loose floor mount reduces the ability to get it into reverse.

Shimming the shifter to the floor is a bizarre process in the manual. It's really pretty simple. If it's too loose the whole shifter will rock in the floor causing lost motion to engage reverse. Finally - if the floor pan is bent out of alignment like after a repair the shifter base will not be be perpendicular with the chassis vertical axis tilted to one side. You may have to get out the Davemotohead BIG hammer to "adjust" the floor. As mentioned before, there is little adjustment at the rear clamp to rotate the shaft to compensate.

Not saying this is your problem, just one thing to look at. BTW - I've had to get out the BIG hammer to "adjust" a few poor panel alignments done at the factory - although I'm not the hammer master Davemotohead is. Freshly painted - looking fine - Danube Blue He obviously has more work to do, but is going to be a great looking vehicle when done. As we talked through his reverse issue - I looked at the coupler and everything looked ok. It came out that it was a 3-speed vehicle and the 66 style Saginaw 4-speed box was installed When this is done, doesn't the shifter base need to change to add the gate detent for the move to R?

I'm thinking this could be the problem, wanted to check with the experts! Re: can't get into reverse gear - LM 4 speed 66 Post by BobWitt » Mon Nov 16, pm 66vairguy - I went to Clark's too - page 23 if I'm reading correctly shows both the lever 6 chrome vs. Just wondering if anyone has real world mis-match experience I think we know he has the 4sp chrome 6 with the 3sp I have a spare known 4-speed, think we'll try that first!

No sign of a struggle, just gone. So anyway I put the car on my lift and noticed I may have a bigger problem. With the engine running and the transmission in neutral the back tires spin in reverse. You can hold them to keep from spinning though.

I put the transmission in reverse and it works as it should. It's not grinding though. I'm not racing the car until I'm sure my trans isn't going to ker-plode on me.

Is there anything I can check with the trans in the car or should I just pull it out and dig in? Cardot60 , May 29, Joined: Jun 20, Posts: Profile Page. Bad Banana , May 30, Joined: Dec 3, Posts: 9, Profile Page.
